Tretinoin Information

What is Tretinoin?

Tretinoin (Retin-A, Avita, Renova) is a derivative of Vitamin A. It also is known as an all-trans retinoic acid. It is the most popular type of treatment for comedonal acne, whiteheads and blackheads and keratosis pilaris. It is available as a cream or gel (brand name Retin-A). It works by increasing skin cell turnover promoting the extrusion of the plugged material in the follicle. Tretinoin cream is also good a preventing the creation of new comedones, it is also the only topical medication that has been shown to reduce and treat wrinkles effectively. It is marketed by various of pharmaceutical companies as Altinac™; Avita®; RENOVA®; Retin-A™; Retin-A®

Tretinoin works by altering the skin cells by modulating gene expression, rather than inducing cell necrosis (death). The effect of tretinoin is the speeding of skin cell turnover, reducing breakouts and producing smoother, younger looking skin. Melanocytes, the skin cells responsible for skin pigment, are suppressed by tretinoin. This decreases skin discoloration and uneven skin tone. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles are reduced, skin feels smoother and looks more evenly colored.

Tretinoin is a prescription drug and it ranges from a concentration of 0.025% to 0.1% in cream vehicle. There is a gel vehicle that is available in concentrations of 0.01% - .025%. The gel is better at penetrating the skin. The cost of tretinoin is $60-$115 for a 40g tube. This size should last between 4-6 months. There are more expensive branded names of Tretinoin such as Renova whose prices range from $100-$140 for a 40g tube..
