Tretinoin Acne

Tretinoin (Retin-A, Avita, Renova) is a derivative of Vitamin A and is the popular treatment for comedonal acne, or whiteheads and blackheads. It is not known exactly how tretinoin works, but it is thought to loosen the cells in the surface of the skin. Tretinoin controls acne effectively by unclogging the pores and also allows for the peeling of the affected skin. With pores unblocked  the skins natural oil producing glands can function normally and decrease the formation of blackheads (comedones) and spots. In addition, tretinoin increases the turnover of the skin cells, which aids the natural exfoliation of the outer layers of skin. US FDA approved it in 1971 for topical treatment of some forms of acne.

Tretinoin is available in the form of topical gel, liquid or cream. It is normally recommended for use every day at nighttime or at interval of some days. It might take six to eight weeks before you see any change in appearance of the skin. At the start of the acne treatment, your acne may get worse with use of Tretinoin. You may have a serious acne outbreak or the skin might appear red, and increase in acne sores may be found with scaling of the skin.  Once you get through this  period the acne should begin to clear up.

Tretinoin application.

30 minutes after washing your face to apply a tiny pea sized amount of retin-a mixed with a moisturizer. This mixture will ensure that the small amount applied will cover your whole face. If there is any moisture left on your skin from washing there is a possibility it can cause more irritation. You should ensure that your  skin is totally dry. Start slowly, every three days, then every two, then every day. If you do it right you'll have almost no side effects. IF you plan to use the tretinoin with a lotion then the cream is better than the gel for mixing. You should also be sure to start with the low percentage and slowly build your way up.
